The Artful Dodgers Studios has young artist Patrick Francis featuring a new exhibition at Little Woods Gallery.
Patrick is a Melbourne-based artist who has been working as a participant at Artful Dodgers Studios in the both the music and art studios, and has been working at Arts Project Australia since 2009. He has won the prestigious Art and Australia Contemporary Art Award in 2012 and has been shown in exhibitions nationally.
Most recently his work has featured in the Melbourne Now exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria, and he has even been invited to show as part of Australia's premiere art event – the 2014 Sydney Biennale.
What makes this all the more impressive is that Patrick has autism, and uses painting as a way to communicate his observations of the world around him.
Little Woods Curator Amy-Jo Jory admitted she was a big fan of the artist. She said "Patrick Francis' works are vivid depictions of portraiture and still life.
"Compelled by famous and infamous historical and celebrity icons, Francis paints a variety of subjects. On the walls of Little Woods you will find a vortex filled with Nicki Minaj, Kylie Minogue, Blondie, Robbie Williams and Madonna, all wide eyed and often with gaping mouths. There is also a pretty excellent variety of cats on display.
"A quarter of the shows we have at Little Woods are with young people from the Artful Dodgers Studios, and the rest are curated through a call-for-applications process," she said.
"Little Woods is about including people who might not normally feel comfortable in more traditional gallery spaces, and encouraging a more diverse range of creative networks for young artists surviving under difficult circumstances."
The Arts and Culture Coordinator of the Artful Dodgers Studios, Marianna Codognotto said Little Woods Gallery was a social enterprise for Jesuit Social Services.
"The gallery provides a unique and engaging opportunity to be involved in further learning and also fosters a model of genuine social inclusion.
